Just keep reading to discover how to protect your smile this National Coffee Day.
Wait, What’s National Coffee Day?
If you’ve never heard of National Coffee Day (NCD), don’t feel left out. The holiday hasn’t been around for very long, having only caught on relatively recently.
National Coffee Day is a commemoration of coffee, especially its cultural significance and popularity. Celebrated on September 29th, the day started getting traction in the United States as early as 2005. It didn’t become a holiday, though, until the Southern Food and Beverage Museum in New Orleans labelled it as such in 2009. Only then did Americans view the 29th as a yearly coffee-related event.
As for why NCD is held in September, people aren’t entirely sure. The most common thought is that it’s meant to be a reminder to resume work after summer.
4 Smile-Friendly Ways to Celebrate
Coffee isn’t exactly the safest drink for your teeth. With that said, here are some smile-friendly ways to have the beverage on the 29th:
Take Careful Sips
Even if you like swishing coffee around your mouth, take careful sips instead. The first option exposes teeth to tooth-decaying acids, as well as colored compounds that stain enamel. Indulging it would thus increase your risk of cavities, a brown or yellow smile, and so on. Meanwhile, small sips let coffee pass through your mouth without touching your teeth much.
Go Easy on Sweeteners
As tasty as they make coffee, you shouldn’t add too many sweeteners to your java. These substances can cause tooth decay, gum disease, and worse when overindulged. As such, you should use them sparingly or opt for healthier alternatives; you’ll better protect your oral health that way.
Drink Water Afterward
Whenever you have coffee, try to drink some water afterward. The latter would rinse any lingering coffee residue from your mouth, as well as neutralize acids that damage enamel. You’d then be less likely to suffer from cavities and “coffee breath,” which would only harm your grin.
Enjoy in Moderation
While NCD may seem like the perfect excuse for all-day coffee drinking, it’s best to enjoy your cup of joe in moderation. Too much coffee can result in enamel erosion, sensitive teeth, and stained smiles. Given that fact, you should limit your consumption and be mindful of how much you drink. Taking these steps goes a long way toward protecting your smile.
As National Coffee Day approaches, take the above tips to heart. They’ll let you enjoy the 29th without doing a number on your mouth.
